What Does Swedish Nostalgia Look Like?
At Linlava, we explore Swedish nostalgia and the emotions evoked by the Swedish countryside—the romantic image of the rural home, the little red cottage, and the warm light filtering through lace curtains.
A place filled with stories of play, security, and traditions passed down through generations. We’re inspired by a time and place where small details, like patterned wallpapers, became part of everyday life, creating a whole world of comfort and imagination.
Astrid Lindgren’s books and the TV series surrounding them were a clear inspiration—The Children of Bullerbyn, Madicken, and the patterned wallpapers that embraced the rooms. This led to our Astrid Nostalgia collection, where we’ve captured the charm of delicate floral wallpapers and subtle graphic aesthetics, evoking the Swedish idyll of the early 1900s.
We've also drawn inspiration from Carl Larsson's harmonious interiors, Elsa Beskow's soft nature motifs, John Bauer's mystical forests, and Carl von Linné—both his passion for Swedish flora and the atmosphere of his preserved home in Hammarby. These influences are reflected in our other collections, such as *Woodland Cabins* and *Leafy Forest Entry*, each complementing this tribute to the ambiance of the Swedish rural home in its own unique way.
Breaking Down Swedish Nostalgia
Continuing with the theme of Swedish nostalgia in our collections, we’ve identified several key attributes that we see as essential to creating the atmosphere we aim for:
Small-Scale Floral Motifs – Tiny flowers in dense, playful patterns that evoke summer meadows, grandma’s aprons, and gardens bursting with perennials. This style calls to mind wallpapers that have adorned homes for generations, where every bloom holds its own story.
Soft Pastels and Earthy Tones – Our "Swedish nostalgia" palette is defined by soft pastels and earthy shades, where misty greens and pale blues meet warm ochres and soft pinks. These colors create a timeless, harmonious atmosphere, instilling a sense of calm and comfort.
Details that Tell a Story – Subtle, intricate details that bring life to the wallpaper. Much like in Carl Larsson’s watercolors or Elsa Beskow’s illustrations, where each bird, flower, or child in motion has its own personality and narrative.
Craftsmanship and Patina – Wallpapers that don’t feel perfect or too polished, but rather carry the essence of age and handmade quality. A slight patina and unevenness in color give an authentic feel, as if the wallpapers have lived a long life, gathering memories from each generation.
Nature’s Presence – A strong connection to Swedish nature, with motifs ranging from deep forests and lush meadows to wildflowers and babbling brooks. Nature is ever-present in a home shaped by Swedish nostalgia, and our patterns are a tribute to this constant closeness.
A Sense of Simplicity and Functionality – Simple yet beautiful, practical yet with a poetic touch. Like the interiors in Astrid Lindgren’s stories or the rural homes painted by Carl Larsson, we strive to recreate the balance where every element serves a purpose but also carries beauty.
A Child’s Perspective – A sense of playfulness and innocence, where the wallpapers become a backdrop for children’s games and dreams. As in Madicken or The Children of Bullerbyn, each room feels like its own world, full of discovery and imagination.
An Openness to the Past – A desire to bridge the past with the present, where the wallpapers are not just nostalgic references but a way to revive and celebrate the traditions and aesthetics that have shaped the Swedish home.
